The Reverend Clarence Lee Tillman, was a hard working pillar of the Athens community. Serving the community as an entrepreneur, he provided support for countless individuals in need. His legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren and the countless others he has impacted.

Operations Specialist 2nd Class Timothy Lamont Saunders, a native of Danville is one of the 17 sailors that was killed serving aboard USS Cole, a guided-missile destroyer with the nickname “Determined Warrior,” that was bombed in a suicide attack while being refueled in Yemen’s Aden harbor. His positive demeanor was infectious towards all those he encountered.

Saunders was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon and Navy Unit Commendation. He held the Navy “E” Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Criteria: Recipient should be a student already enrolled at Georgia Southern University with a GPA of 3.0 or better. and be from a family of either an active duty or retired member of the Armed Forces. First preference goes to someone from Athens-Clarke county, GA. Next preference would be to those from Metro Atlanta that meet the previously described criteria.
